The idea of divorce might provide some negative imagery to some. It may be portrayed as expensive, never-ending, uncaring lawyers, and drawn out cases, heartache, and more.

Even though family law is supposed to be about serving people who are struggling with a difficult time in their life when they need help the most.

Jeff Hughes selected law as a medium to reach his community and the families within it. When first starting his career, he has worked as a lawyer and noticed that the status quo had been broken and wanted to implement a radical change.

As a co-founder of Sterling Law Offices, his goal and focus was to get rid of the outdated family law "old school" system.

Jeff's ideal or "perfect" world is one where families do not need to be broken apart. Sadly, this does not happen in reality. People find themselves in family legal situations where they need help, and that's part of life.

A core belief that Jeff has because of this imperfect world is that, when people in the community find themselves in need of help due to a family legal crisis, it is important that we serve them. It is vital to empower clients and provide them a voice for when they feel voiceless.

Next, usually a law firm will use hourly billing where the client is not able to tell how much they will pay in the end. For Sterling, it is essential for the client to feel confident in their choice when selecting a lawyer, so we have removed that model and provide a way to tell the fees associated up front.

Furthermore, Jeff's main concern is to ensure that the firm is amazing at one – family law. To him, this is the key to success. In order for him to achieve this, he focuses every available firm resource into family law in order to excel above the competition. This allows clients to have confidence that their lawyer is focused 100% on family law, not dabbling in real estate one minute and criminal law the next.

In addition, Jeff feels that the cliché "put the client first" does not always play out the way it is suppose to and instead it may seem like the lawyers are putting themselves first. That is why Sterling surveys ever client multiple times during our representation. It is very beneficial to receive feedback, but most lawyers are scared to know that truth on how they're doing.

Besides his career, Jeff and Winona have five boys and one girl. The family enjoys traveling in order to create memories that last a lifetime. Jeff is also a very frequent reader. In terms of sports he loves to downhill ski, play ping pong, and fishing on the Chippewa Flowage in Haward, WI.
